Beinecke Scholarship for Graduate Study in Arts/Humanities/Social Sciences

The Beinecke Scholarship Program provides graduate study scholarships in the arts, humanities, and social sciences to JUNIORS of exceptional ability who have a high degree of financial need.
 
The Beinecke program seeks highly motivated and intellectually accomplished JUNIORS who plan to pursue graduate studies toward the Ph.D. in the arts, humanities, and social sciences after graduation. "Junior" means a student who plans to continue full-time undergraduate study and who expects to receive a baccalaureate degree between December 2013 and August 2014.
 
FIELDS OF STUDY: The Beinecke program is open to students planning research-oriented Masters and Ph.D. studies in any field in the arts, humanities, or social sciences. Professionally-oriented degree programs of any kind ARE NOT supported.
 
FINANCIAL NEED: The Beinecke program seeks candidates who have a documented history of receiving significant need-based financial aid as an undergraduate. Candidates for nomination by the University of Maryland should be recipients of Pell Grants or be able to demonstrate an equivalent level of underlying financial need.
 
Candidates for the Beinecke Scholarship must be nominated by their university or college – the University of Maryland, College Park can nominate 1 outstanding junior annually to compete for a Beinecke Scholarship. To seek nomination, candidates must submit a complete draft of a Beinecke Scholarship application by February 4, 2013.

Who may apply: To be eligible for Beinecke Scholarship nomination, a student must:
 
  • Have demonstrated superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement and personal promise during his or her undergraduate career. Generally, a minimum GPA of 3.7 will be required for nomination; exceptions may be made in extraordinary cases.
 
  • Be a college junior pursuing a bachelor's degree during the 2012-2013 academic year.
 
  • Have firm plans to enter a master's or doctoral program in the arts, humanities or social sciences after graduation.
 
  • Be a United States citizen or a US national from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
 
  • Be a Pell Grant recipient as an undergraduate at the University of Maryland or be able to demonstrate an equivalent level of underlying financial need.
 
Award Amount: Each scholar receives $4,000 immediately prior to entering graduate school and an additional $30,000 while attending graduate school.
 
Duration: Scholars must utilize all funding within five years.
 
Campus Deadline: February 4, 2013. This is the deadline for submitting a complete draft of a Beinecke application to be considered for University of Maryland, College Park nomination.

Learn about the Gilman International Scholarship, which provides up to $5000 for Pell Grant recipients to study abroad. In the past two years 43 Maryland applicants have won Gilman Scholarships for study abroad!

SARPP Program is Planning a Study Abroad Program for Spring Break

STUDY ABROAD!!

HLTH 389S is a three credit, interdisciplinary 10-day study abroad course from March 15-March 24, 2013 where students will travel to Rome and Sicily to learn about the issues surrounding domestic violence.  Students enrolled in HLTH389S will learn about the dynamics of domestic violence including the power and control wheel, the cycle of violence and safety planning.  Students will be expected to draw comparisons of the response to domestic violence between Rome, Sicily and the United States.  Students will visit various community organizations to further their understanding of domestic violence in Rome and Sicily.   Students will blog daily during the course and must be available to present on their experience during a Sexual Assault Awareness Month event on April 10, 2013.  

Visits in Rome and Sicily will include:
· Community service and touring of a local domestic violence shelter
· Speaking with law enforcement officials
· Visiting a local university to learn about their domestic violence resources
· Speaking with community members
· Visits to major attractions

If you would like to find out more information on the trip we will be hosting an information session on December 3rd at 5:30pm in the University Health Center on the first floor in Sahet. During this session you will find out what the proposed itinerary looks like, discuss finances, have the opportunity to meet the professors,and ask any additional questions. IMPORTANT: All candidates for Udall Scholarships must nominated by their college or university. Dr. Wendy Whittemore is Maryland’s campus advisor for the Udall Scholarship. Please contact us at udall@umd.edu for information about the University of Maryland nomination process.
 
The Udall Foundation seeks future leaders across a wide spectrum of environmental fields, including policy, engineering, science, education, urban planning and renewal, business, health, justice, and economics. The Foundation regularly awards 80 scholarships and 50 honorable mentions on the basis of merit to sophomore and junior level college students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment. Udall Scholars take part in a four-day Orientation in Tucson, Arizona where they meet with other Scholars, elected officials and environmental leaders. Scholars also gain access to a network of environmental policy professionals through the Udall Alumni listserv.
 
Because contributions to the environment can be made in many different ways, Udall Scholars represent a broad range of academic majors and career interests. Recent Udall Scholars have majored in environmental sciences and policy studies, agriculture, political science, natural resource management, sociology, anthropology, American Indian studies, tribal public policy, history, English, theater, landscape architecture, and public health, to name just a few areas.
 
Award Amount: The Udall Scholarship provides up to $5,000 for tuition, room and board, or other educational expenses. Udall Scholarships may be used for tuition, fees, books, room and board, or other specifically approved expenses.
 
Duration: The Udall Scholarship provides one year of support. Sophomores who receive a Udall Scholarship are eligible to reapply for a second year of support.
 
UMCP Campus Deadline: Friday, February 8, 2013 - All Maryland applicants for nomination to the Udall Scholarship competition must turn in their applications online with supporting materials to the National Scholarships Office, 2403 Marie Mount Hall, by this date.

The Pickering, Payne, and Rangel Fellowship programs seek young men and women who are dedicated to representing America's interests abroad. Students with financial need, women, and members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the State Department or USAID Foreign Services, are encouraged to apply. Pickering, Payne, and Rangel awards provide financial support for two years of graduate study (and one year of undergraduate study also for junior-year Pickering awardees), as well as summer internship placements and mentoring programs. The USAID Donald M. Payne International Development Graduate Fellowship Program seeks to attract outstanding young people who are interested in pursuing careers in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). If you want to work on the front lines of some of the most pressing global challenges of our times — poverty, hunger, injustice, disease, environmental degradation, climate change, conflict and violent extremism – the Foreign Service of the U.S. Agency for International Development provides an opportunity to advance U.S. foreign policy interests and reflect the American people's compassion and support of human dignity. The Payne Fellowship, which provides up to $90,000 in benefits over two years for graduate school, internships, and professional development activities, provides a unique pathway to the USAID Foreign Service. The Payne Fellowship encourages the application of members of minority groups who have historically been underrepresented in international development careers and those with financial need.

Description: The Thomas R. Pickering Graduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship program provides funding to outstanding students who are planning to enter the United States Department of State Foreign Service.  The Pickering Fellowship provides financial support to for two-year master's degree programs in public policy, international affairs, public administration, or academic fields such as business, economics, political science, sociology, or foreign languages. The program also provides State Department mentoring and internship opportunities. Each successful candidate is obligated to a minimum of three years of service in an appointment as a Foreign Service officer.

RANGEL INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP

Description: The Pickering Undergraduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship program was created by the US State Department to attract outstanding students from all ethnic, racial, and social backgrounds who are interested in pursuing careers as Foreign Service officers. Foreign Service officers staff U.S. embassies, consulates, and missions worldwide and also serve in Washington, D.C. Their responsibilities include policy analysis, formulation, and execution; management of resources; the provision of services to Americans in need; implementation of U.S. immigration and nationality law; trade promotion and business facilitation; public diplomacy; and representation of U.S. interests. The Pickering Fellowship program seeks to recruit talented juniors majoring in fields relevant to international affairs, political and economic analysis, administration, management, and science policy. Each successful candidate is obligated to a minimum of three years of service in an appointment as a Foreign Service officer.

RANGEL INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
Who Can Apply: U.S. Citizens – Full-time undergraduate students (Freshmen see note below) – GPA of 3.2 or higher required – All Majors– Students with financial need, women, and members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, are encouraged to apply. IMPORTANT: The selection committee my consider students who have completed their freshman year if these students have outstanding academic backgrounds and significant international experience.
Description: The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program is designed to provide students with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs, greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and the enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers. The Program encourages the involvement of African American and other minority group students. Students who take part in the Program are referred to as Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Scholars (Rangel Scholars). This program takes place at Howard University in Washington DC for six weeks beginning in mid-June. It includes academic courses and additional seminars and visits to give students exposure to key policymakers and practitioners of international affairs.
Academics: During this program, students receive intensive instruction in three courses: Political Economy, History of U.S. Foreign Relations and Writing. Nine semester hours of academic credit may be awarded.
Outside Activities: To enhance their understanding of the conduct of U.S. foreign policy and international career options, Program participants meet with Executive Branch policymakers, Members of Congress, representatives of non-governmental organizations, foreign government officials and other individuals involved in international relations. In recent years, participants have visited the State Department, Capitol Hill, the Central Intelligence Agency, the World Bank, the United Nations, the Pentagon and the National Foreign Affairs Training Center. Award Amount: Students who are accepted receive tuition, travel, room and board, as well as a $3,500 stipend for the program.

NOAA Hollings Scholarship - Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and Policy

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings scholarship program is designed to: (1) increase undergraduate training in oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, and education and foster multidisciplinary training opportunities; (2) increase public understanding and support for stewardship of the ocean and atmosphere and improve environmental literacy; (3) recruit and prepare students for public service careers with NOAA and other natural resource and science agencies at the federal, state and local levels of government; and (4) recruit and prepare students for careers as teachers and educators in oceanic and atmospheric science and to improve scientific and environmental education in the United States. The deadline to apply is Friday, January 31, 2013. US Citizenship and a minimum GPA of 3.0 are required – see detailed Eligibility requirements below.

AWARD BENEFITS: The Hollings Scholarship Program provides successful SOPHOMORE applicants with awards that include academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000 per year) for full-time study during the 9-month academic year; a 10-week, full-time internship position ($650/week) during the summer at a NOAA facility; and, if reappointed, academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000) for full-time study during a second 9-month academic year. The internship between the first and second years of the award provides the Scholars with ‘‘hands-on''/ practical educational training experience in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy, management, and education activities. Awards also include travel funds to attend a mandatory Hollings Scholarship Program orientation, conferences where students present a paper or poster, and a housing subsidy for scholars who do not reside at home during the summer internship.

The Maryland Summer Scholars Program (MSS) provides an exciting opportunity for undergraduate students to spend the summer working closely with faculty mentors on ambitious research or artistic projects. Maryland Summer Scholars research may take place in College Park or anywhere in the US or abroad as required by the nature of the project.  For the summer of 2013, the program will provide awards of $3,000 to approximately 30 outstanding, competitively selected applicants. [Please note: if your proposed research requires travel outside of the College Park area, you may apply for a supplementary travel award of up to $1,000.]
 
Students who carry out Maryland Summer Scholars projects gain a competitive edge when applying for graduate study, fellowships, employment and other competitive opportunities. Many Summer Scholars turn their research into an independent study or honors thesis during their junior or senior year.
 
Who can apply: You are eligible to apply if you will have completed at least two full semesters by the end of spring 2013, if you have a GPA of at least 3.4, and if you will be enrolled at the University of Maryland, College Park, in fall 2013. All academic majors are eligible.
 
Application Deadline: The deadline to apply for summer 2013 awards will be Monday, February 4, 2013. It is important that candidates begin developing their proposals as soon as possible.
 
The Maryland Center for Undergraduate Research will hold numerous information sessions about the summer 2013 MSS program. Please note: All information sessions will be held in 2403 Marie Mount Hall. We ask that you reply to ugresearch@umd.edu indicating the session you plan to attend as space is limited (if you are interested but cannot attend reply to the same address to be notified about additional sessions).
