Route 1 Ride Position


TITLE: Community Marketing Coordinator

CATEGORY: Undergraduate Student – Junior or Senior

DUTIES: The Route 1 Ride Collaborative, a public-private initiative to promote the Route 1 Ride (Bus 17) Bus Service, is seeking a student intern to work closely with the Collaborative team in marketing and branding the bus service, promoting economic development, and improving the quality of life for those who work, reside, and study in the Route 1 Corridor area. The ideal candidate must be a self-starter, outgoing and enthusiastic, and have good business and marketing sense as well as strong writing and communication skills. They must also have excellent interpersonal skills to interact and negotiate with a diverse set of persons and be able to carry out their duties with minimal supervision.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Take a lead role in marketing “Z-Cards” to local business owners and organizational directors by meeting with them, negotiating a promotional contract, and closing the sale. Must also assist in design, production, and distribution of the Z-Cards by working with graphic artists, vendors, and other organizational personnel ensuring the process moves smoothly and within a given time frame.
  • Work with Campus, Stamp Union and Department of Transportation Services (DOTS) Marketing in developing and executing a plan for promotion of the Route 1 Ride bus service to UMD students, staff, and faculty.
  • Collaborate with Anacostia Trails Heritage Area (ATHA) in designing Route 1 Ride display pieces that target students and business patrons of the Route 1 Ride.
  • Strengthen partnership with UMD DOTS to ensure continual promotion of Route 1 Ride takes place, including prominent space on their website, promotional pieces at important campus locations, and on all their shuttles.
  • Contact Resident Life Director or point person and coordinate meetings with Resident Assistants (RA) in providing information and materials on Route 1 Ride services.
  • Attend new/returning student orientations and present information on Route 1 Ride. 
  • Meet with various campus groups regularly presenting the Route 1 Ride materials. 
  • Meet with resident managers of student high-rises and multi-unit housing (The Varsity, Mazza Grandmarc, Franklin Park, etc.) and promote Route 1 Ride services.
  • Contact and meet with local business-owners, explain benefits of the Route 1 Ride to their business & employees, provide materials and encourage display of them. 
  • Ensure local municipalities have promotion materials for their residents, visitors, and businesses. 
  • Strengthen ties with Student Government Association ensuring student campus leadership are familiar with and help promote Route 1 Ride.
  • Attend local festivals and promote Route 1 Ride as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Prior marketing experience or good business sense required 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills 
  • Ability to mainly work independently as part of a team project 
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, being able to document tasks and keep records 
  • Preferred knowledge or experience in community projects or organizing
COMPENSATION: $9 per hour 25 hours/week
