International Opportunities in Political Science

International Opportunities in Political Science

1. KENYA: Teach Conflict Prevention and Peace Building

This organization was born after the Election Violence in 2007-8.
Their aim is to build, at the grassroots level, citizen's skill in peace-making & conflict prevention
thus creating a community culture that disallows the birth of such violence.
Kenya will have national elections in March 2013. No volunteers will be in Kenya at this time.

2. MONGOLIA:  Help with Democracy Building - determine who gets the wealth?

Mongolia is at a critical cross-roads.
It has shifted from a Soviet era government and is now an "emerging democracy."
i.e. It doesn't have all the democratic institutions in place.
Foreign mining companies are eager to tap Mongolia's vast mineral resources:
gold, copper, coal, uranium, iron ore and oil.
Will Mongolia distribute this wealth to its citizens?
Or will only a few at the top get the wealth like in Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea?
Or will all Mongolians prosper from their new-found mineral wealth?

3. MOROCCO: Work with Human Rights, Refugees or International Relations

Morocco is a modern, secular, traditionally Western-leaning, constitutional monarchy.
Responding to Arab Spring impetus, the king has made constitutional reforms but few that curb his power.
This is a great place to learn and/or practice (Moroccan) Arabic.

4. MALTA: Aid Asylum Seekers in Resettlement

The turmoil in Libya, Syria, Sudan and Somalia is producing a steady stream of refugees heading north.
Malta now has the highest ratio of immigrants per capita of any European Union member.
Under European rules, because immigrants first landed here, they are essentially stuck in Malta.
Officials routinely jail everyone who arrives by boat, in many cases for as long as 18 months.

5. INDONESIA: Human Rights for native peoples on Sumatra

The Indonesian archipelago spans 3,200 miles and 17,00 islands.
The native Batak of Sumatra chafe under Java's central control.
The lesson learned from the 1965 purges when 600,000 to 1,000,000 leftists
or Communists were killed was not to oppose the central government.
Come help with this delicate balance of asserting one's rights but not being crushed.
