Advocacy Internships

Internships in the field of advocacy are generally focused on influencing public policy and resource allocation decisions within certain systems and institutions. Most advocacy organizations serve to highlight a particular issue or serve as a voice for a particular population. Involvement in advocacy can include such activities as public speaking, media campaigns, and research publication, among others.

American Association of University Women (Advocacy)

AAUW is a leading voice promoting equity and education for women and girls. Since 1881, AAUW members have examined and taken positions on issues of the day — educational, social, economic, and political. They have worked as a national grassroots organization in areas such as legal advocacy, public policy and global connections.

American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (Nonprofit, Advocacy)

The ACEEE is a nonprofit organization that seeks to advance energy efficiency policies and harness energy efficiency to increase the economic potential of the United States. They promote energy efficiency by conducting technical and policy analyses, advising policymakers, and working closely with businesses, government officials, and various organizations. ACEEE also conduct conferences and workshops for energy efficiency professionals and produces reports and other media outreach materials. Interns have done work in the field and planned events for the nonprofit.

American Foreign Service Association (Advocacy)

The American Foreign Service Association was established in 1924 to represent active and retired Foreign Service employees. Its mission is to enhance the effectiveness of the Foreign Service and protect the rights of its members. Available internships are in areas such as advocacy and government affairs, communications, event planning and executive office.

Energy Future Coalition (Non-profit, Advocacy)

The Energy Future Coalition is a non-partisan, public policy initiative that seeks to stimulate the green economy and aims to build relationships with businesses and labor organizations with environmental groups for non-partisan, broad solutions. The coalition receives financial and strategic support from United Nations Foundation on environmental policy issues. In the past, interns have researched policies and provided administrative support.

Environmental Protection Agency (Advocacy, Federal Gov.)

The mission of EPA is to protect human health and the environment. To do this they develop and enforce regulations, give grants, study environmental issues, teach people about the environment and publish information.

J Street (Advocacy)

J Street describes itself as the political home for pro-Israel, pro-peace Americans. The organization advocates Israeli interests, Jewish and democratic values, and a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. J Street offers a variety of internships in Washington, DC and in other locations. Interns will have the opportunity to engage in new media outreach, develop fundraising tactics, learn about and engage in lobbying activities on Capitol Hill, or learn about NGO and non-profit development and organization.

Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights (Advocacy)

Created in 1963, the principal mission of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law is to secure equal justice for all through the rule of law, targeting in particular the inequities confronting African Americans and other racial and ethnic minorities. The Lawyers' Committee is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization to enlist the private bar's leadership and resources in combating racial discrimination and the resulting inequality of opportunity.

Missionary Society of St. Columban (Advocacy)

Missionary Society of St. Columban is a not-for-profit corporation organized for religious, educational and charitable purposes. Interns have the opportunity to work in advocacy or service positions. Advocacy interns meet with Congressional staffers in areas such as human trafficking, US immigration, climate change and international trade agreements.

Murphy Anderson PLLC (Advocacy, Law)

Murphy Anderson is a Washington-based law firm representing workers and unions. They practice labor, employment, whistleblower and First Amendment law. In addition to offering fall and spring internships they offer a summer clerk program as well.

Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) (Advocacy)

The Muslim Public Affairs Council is a public service agency working for the civil rights of American Muslims, for the integration of Islam into American pluralism, and for a positive, constructive relationship between American Muslims and their representatives.

National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (Advocacy)

NCCS’s mission is to advocate for quality cancer care for all people affected by cancer and to be an advocacy organization that reflects the needs of all cancer survivors to effect policy change at the national level.

National Criminal Justice Association (Law, Advocacy)

Based in Washington DC, the NCJA represents state, tribal and local governments on crime prevention and crime control issues. Its members represent all facets of the criminal and juvenile justice community, from law enforcement, corrections, prosecution, defense, courts, victim-witness services and educational institutions to federal, state, and local elected officials. Interns primarily research and write articles for the NCJA’s newsletter through summarizing and analyzing criminal justice research reports, as well as attending and reporting on congressional hearings, Justice Department briefings, and other meetings around the city.

National Consumer Voice (Advocacy, Consulting/Analysis)

Founded in 1975 because of public concern about substandard care in nursing homes, the Consumer Voice's mission is to represent consumers at the national level for quality long-term care, services and supports. Interns have the opportunity to assist the staff with projects ranging from marketing to public policy to administration.

National Education Association (NGO, Advocacy)

The National Education Association (NEA) is a nationwide education professional organization spanning all levels of education (pre-school to university). With a strong conviction in providing a great public school for every student, the NEA advocates for education professionals and a united force of public educators to help every student succeed. Interns can fill a variety of positions in the NEA. Internships may involve research, analysis, writing reports, meetings and policy forums, and interviews with governance and staff.

People for the American Way (Advocacy, Grassroots, Lobbying)

People For the American Way’s mission is making the promises of America real for every American. As an educational institution, they communicate with the American people through printed materials, radio, television, public lectures and discussions. They gather information, analyze it, and distribute their findings to the public in a manner that provides for full and fair exposition of the issues.

Sexuality Information and Education Council of the US (Advocacy, Education)

The Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States was founded in 1964 to provide education and information about sexuality and sexual and reproductive health. SIECUS educates teachers, advocates to policymakers, and informs the public about these important topics.
