State/Local Government Internships

This field focuses on providing interns with the ability to experience government on the state and local level. Interns have to chance to work with delegates and state senators in the Maryland General Assembly, or work with state and county attorney generals. Internships in this area provide students with the skills to understand the lower levels of government.

Democratic Governors Association (Partisan, State/Local Gov.)

Founded in 1983, the Democratic Governors Association (DGA) is an independent voluntary political organization organized to support Democratic governors and candidates across the nation. As the only organization dedicated to electing Democratic governors and candidates, the DGA participates at all levels of campaigns, from providing resources to fund operations to helping articulate and deliver their messages. The DGA also provides expert advice in policy areas to Democratic governors and candidates.

District of Columbia Public Schools Central Office (Education, State/Local Gov.)

An internship in the District of Columbia Public Schools’ central office will help students give students the opportunity to learn about managing an urban school district. Additionally, interns will work on projects to help close the achievement gap in public urban schools.

Maryland Attorney General's Office (Law, State/Local Gov.)

The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State. The Attorney General's Office has general charge, supervision and direction of the legal business of the State, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major departments, various boards, commissions, officials and institutions of State Government. The Office further represents the State in all cases pending in the Appellate Courts of the State, and in the U.S. Supreme Court and lower Federal Courts.

Maryland Democratic Party (State/Local Gov.)

This is Maryland’s local branch of the Democratic Party. Headquartered in Annapolis, they provide support to candidates and encourage people to register to vote. Interns have the opportunity to become familiar with the structure of local politics and learn the necessary skills to work successfully with candidates and volunteers. They will have the chance to directly work on campaigns, recruit and train volunteers, and attend meetings and events.

Maryland General Assembly (Law, State/Local Gov.)

The General Assembly is Maryland's legislative body and directly represents the electorate. The state has 47 districts represented by 47 Senators and 141 Delegates. The General Assembly meets each year for 90 days within the State House in Annapolis.

Maryland State House (Law, State/Local Gov.)

The Maryland State House is the oldest statehouse still in legislative use and is where the Maryland General Assembly convenes for three months of the year. Currently, the offices of the governor, the lieutenant governor, the speaker of the House of Delegates, and the president of the Senate are housed in the Maryland State House.

Maryland StateStat (State/Local Gov.)

Maryland StateStat is a performance measurement and management tool used by the Maryland state government implemented by Governor Martin O'Malley in 2007. The mission of the program is to enhance the accountability and efficiency of the state government.

Montgomery County State's Attorney's Office (Law, State/Local Gov.)

The State’s Attorney serves as the chief prosecutor in Montgomery County, Maryland, whose main responsibility is the investigation and prosecution of criminal defendants. The Office of the State’s Attorney is staffed with 70 full-time Assistant State’s Attorneys, including the independently elected State’s Attorney, two appointed Deputy State’s Attorneys, and supported by a highly trained staff of legal assistants, investigators, victim/witness coordinators and volunteers. The Office aims to serve the public and seek justice for the victims of crime and to educate the public on criminal-justices issues.

Office of Community Relations (PG Co.) (State/Local Gov.)

The Office of Community Relations seeks to engage Prince George’s County residents and encourage all residents to participate fully in their government. They achieve this through proactive research, professional constituent services and collaborative problem solving.

Office of Maryland State Delegate LeRoy Myers (State/Local Gov.)

Representing Maryland’s state district 1C of Allegany and Washington Counties, Delegate LeRoy Myers has served in the House of Delegates since 2003. He sits on the Ways and Means Committee, the House Facilities Committee, the Rules and Executive Nominations Committee and the Joint Committee on Gaming Oversight.

Office of Maryland State Senator Paul Pinsky (State/Local Gov.)

Paul Pinsky became a member of the Maryland Senate in 1994 after serving two terms in the House of Delegates. He serves on the Education, Health and Environmental Affairs Committee. Pinsky represents the 22nd District of Prince George’s County.

WSSC Headquarters (State/Local Government)

Established in 1918, WSSC is currently among the largest water and wastewater utilities in the nation, with a network of nearly 5,600 miles of fresh water pipeline and over 5,400 miles of sewer pipeline. Their service area spans nearly 1,000 square miles in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties, and they serve 1.8 million residents through approximately 460,000 customer accounts. WSSC drinking water has always met or exceeded federal standards.
