Federal Government Internships

Federal government internships provide a wide variety of options to students seeking exposure to federal bureaucracy. Interns can combine interests in specific policy areas to help build skills in research, analysis, leadership or outreach. Additionally, interns have the opportunity to work in any facet of the federal government: executive branch, judicial branch, legislative branch, or governmental agencies and departments.

Administrative Office of the United States Courts (Federal Government)

This federal judicial office was created in 1939 in order to support the operation of the United States Court system. It provides many services to the court – including legal, financial, and administrative support – as well as implementing and executing Judicial Conference policies. . The agency's lawyers, public administrators, accountants, systems engineers, analysts, architects, statisticians, and other staff provide a long list of professional services to meet the needs of judges and the more than 32,000 Judiciary employees working in more than 800 locations nationwide. Interns have assisted in the budgeting and assessment process, as well as reviewing financial data reports.

Congressional Research Service (Federal Government, Research/Development)

The Congressional Research Service (CRS) provides policy and legal analysis to members of the United States Congress, regardless of party affiliation. The CRS is committed to ensuring that committees and members of Congress always have access to the nation’s best thinking. Through the CRS’s three internship programs (Law Clerk, Student Diversity, and Volunteer), interns can learn about the legislative process and get experience writing analytical reports and memoranda. Interns often work with professional staff to research policy-related issues and questions.

Economic Development Administration- Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Federal Government)

Housed within the U.S. Economic Development Administration, the Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (OIE) works to foster a more innovative U.S. economy focused on turning new ideas and inventions into products and technologies that spur job growth and competitiveness while promoting economic development. Created by former Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke and made official by Congress through the America Competes Act of 2010, the OIE promotes and supports high-growth entrepreneurship, accelerates commercialization of federally funded research, works with other agencies and the White House to collaborate on policies and programs to support entrepreneurship and commercialization, supports the National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship (NACIE), which is chaired by the Secretary of Commerce, and leads the Regional Innovation Strategies Program.

Federal Labor Relations Authority (Federal Government)

The Federal Labor Relations Authority (FLRA) is an administration agency that mediates labor relations between the federal government and its employees. Federal Student Aid, a part of the U.S. Department of Education, is the largest provider of student financial aid in the nation. Federal Student Aid, provides more than $150 billion in federal grants, loans, and work-study funds each year to more than 15 million students paying for college or career school. Federal Student Aid is responsible for managing the student financial assistance programs authorized under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965.

Federal Trade Commission- Bureau of Competition (Federal Government)

The Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Competition enforces the nation's antitrust laws, which form the foundation of our free market economy. The Federal Trade Commission Act and the Clayton Act, both passed by Congress in 1914, give the Commission authority to enforce the antitrust laws. The Bureau of Competition investigates potential law violations and seeks legal remedies in federal court or before the FTC's administrative law judges. The Bureau also serves as a resource for policy makers on competition issues, and works closely with foreign competition agencies to promote sound and consistent outcomes in the international arena.

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) (Federal Gov.)

The Food and Drug Administration is an agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, one of the United States federal executive departments. The FDA is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety, tobacco products, dietary supplements, prescription and over-the-counter pharmaceutical drugs, vaccines, biopharmaceuticals, blood transfusions, medical devices, electromagnetic radiation emitting devices, and veterinary products.

House Armed Services Committee (Federal Government)

The oversight responsibilities of the Committee on Armed Services are conducted throughout the calendar year. They are instrumental in the committee's consideration of the annual defense authorization bill, which covers the breadth of the operations of the Department of Defense as well as the national security functions of the Department of Energy and other related areas. The annual national defense budget involves millions of military and civilian personnel, thousands of facilities, and hundreds of agencies, departments, and commands located throughout the world. Contingency operations related to the global war on terrorism will continue to expand the range of topics requiring committee oversight including strategic, operational, and budgetary issues of great scope and complexity.

House Committee on Science, Space and Technology (Federal Gov.)

Created after the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, this committee was the first standing committee created in the House in 11 years and the first committee since 1892 to be established for an entirely new area of jurisdiction.
