Defense Internships

Defense Internships

Internships in this field focus on factors in the United States defense arena. Interns can choose to work with immigration, the military or at the Department of Defense, among others. However, all internships include features of enhancing and enforcing the defense agenda of the nation – either through educating publics, promoting homeland security, or working with defense strategies in different countries.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Defense, Federal Gov.)

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is the principal investigative arm of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Created in 2003, ICE's primary mission is to promote homeland security and public safety through the criminal and civil enforcement of federal laws governing border control, customs, trade and immigration.

Institute for National Strategic Studies (Defense, Federal Gov.)

The Institute for National Strategic Studies conducts research for officials such as the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Through their six research centers they support the national strategic components of the academic programs at the National Defense University and provide outreach to other US governmental agencies and the broader national security community.

The National Defense University is America's pre-eminent institution for national security and joint professional military education, research, outreach and strategic studies. The internship program gives participants the opportunity to learn from professionals working together to educate senior military and civilian leaders in areas such as national security strategy, joint and multinational operations and regional defense strategies.

Pentagon (Defense)

The Pentagon is the headquarters of the US Department of Defense. The mission of the Department of Defense is to provide the military forces needed to deter war and to protect the security of the country. The Pentagon uses the Pathways Program to hire interns who are interested in seeking federal government experience.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (Defense, Federal Gov.)

United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is the government agency that oversees lawful immigration to the United States. USCIS aims to strengthen the security and integrity of the immigration system, support immigrants' integration and participation in American civic culture, and promote flexible and sound immigration policies and programs.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security (Defense, Federal Gov.)

The Department of Homeland Security’s mission is to secure the nation from the many threats we face. This requires the employees in jobs that range from aviation and border security to emergency response, from cybersecurity analyst to chemical facility inspector. The Department offers internships ranging from health and science to public affairs.

Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (Defense)

The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) is the largest military medical center in the nation. Their mission is to ensure the readiness and care of the Uniformed Services and their families. They provide comprehensive care to prevent disease, restore health, and maximize readiness. WRNMMC also provides care for the President and Vice-President of the United States, Members of Congress, and Justices of the Supreme Court. In addition, when authorized, WRNMMC provides care for foreign military and embassy personnel.
